Tap Captions and Descript
Descript makes the transcript part of the editing process. Tap Captions focuses on adding captions and narration to a video on your iPhone. The right choice depends on whether you need to edit the sequence or finish the words that go with it.
Compare the workflow
| What matters | Tap Captions | Descript |
|---|---|---|
| Main workflow | Open local footage, add captions or narration, save | Edit audio and video through a transcript |
| What text editing means | Review the captions and narration for your clip | Use changes to the transcript to edit the media |
| Best starting point | A prepared clip on your iPhone | A recording that needs transcript-based editing |
| Local focus | On-device video processing on iOS 27 | A broader audio and video project editor |
| Availability | iPhone beta through TestFlight | See Descript's supported platforms and plans |
Descript describes its text-based approach on its product site. Its editing guide explains how script edits relate to the audio and video.
When to choose Tap Captions
The clip is ready and you want to add readable text or explain it with a voiceover. You prefer to work with the local file on your phone and keep processing on the device. That is the workflow Tap Captions is designed for.
It is a useful fit for a short demonstration or a social clip prepared from existing footage. See tutorials and demos for a practical example.
When to choose Descript
Consider Descript when the transcript is how you want to shape the edit. For a spoken recording, changing the sequence by working with text can be more relevant than styling captions on a finished clip.
Correcting a caption in Tap Captions is not the same as cutting the underlying recording. If transcript-based cutting is central to your work, test that workflow in Descript before choosing a more focused tool.
Try a representative clip
Use a video with the kind of speech you usually record. Check how each tool handles a correction, a change in timing and the export you need. Keep the source available while you compare the results.
