Caption a video without a cloud upload.
Offline editing begins before you lose the connection. Get the full video onto your iPhone and prepare the speech assets you need. Then use Caption On to process and save the edit on the device.
Prepare while connected
- Install the beta and open it before your trip.
- Download the source video from iCloud Photos or your Files provider.
- Prepare the speech or voice assets for the language you want to use.
- Check that there is enough storage for the original and the finished copy.
- Try one small project with the connection off.
Apple's speech framework uses system-managed assets for supported speech services. Its AssetInventory documentation describes that asset management. Required downloads are separate from uploading your video to an editing service.
Test the whole workflow
Turn on Airplane Mode and make sure Wi-Fi is also off. Open your prepared clip, generate the captions or narration you need, and save a finished copy. Play the saved file through to the end.
This checks more than opening a thumbnail or an existing project. If a voice, original file or other required asset is missing, reconnect to prepare it before relying on the workflow somewhere without service.
Understand what happens after export
The saved video can remain on the phone. Sharing it to a social network, sending it through an online messaging service or syncing it to cloud storage needs a connection.
Photos and Files may sync your saved copy later according to your settings. On-device processing does not turn off iCloud Photos or change your backup choices.
Keep a backup of the original
Use a copy for your first offline test, especially during the beta. Keep the source until you have checked the output and know the saved file is where you expect it to be.
