Get your video ready before you edit.

A clip that plays from start to finish on your iPhone is a good starting point. Before adding captions or voiceover, check where the file lives and whether the original has finished downloading.

Videos in Photos

Open the clip and let it load. If you use iCloud Photos with optimized storage, your phone may need to retrieve the full original. Keep a connection until that work finishes.

For an explicit local copy, follow Apple's instructions for downloading photos and videos. Exporting an unmodified original can be useful when you want the source file rather than a previously edited version.

Videos in Files

Files can show both local storage and cloud providers. Save or download the clip onto the phone before you plan to work offline. Check the location and open the file to confirm that it is a video, rather than a shortcut or a link to one.

If a video comes from a message, another editor or a download, choose a version you have permission to edit and share. Keep a copy of the source.

Check storage and playback

Play the beginning, middle and end. Listen for the audio you expect to caption. Make sure the orientation is correct and that the file does not stop before the recording ends.

Leave space for a second full video and working files. The amount needed depends on the clip and export settings. Avoid deleting your only original to make room for an edit.

Open the clip in Tap Captions

Use Photos or Files to select the video you want the app to process. You choose the clip. The local import flow starts the project without uploading it to a processing service.

If a file cannot be opened, confirm that it plays in Photos first. Save a fresh compatible copy from the source app if needed, keeping the original. Include the source app and file details when reporting a beta issue.

Before you disconnect

Check playback with the network off and prepare any required speech assets while still connected. Continue with the offline editing guide or request TestFlight access.
