Start with the video you already have.
Your camera roll is a useful place to begin. Tap Captions opens videos on your iPhone and processes them there, without uploading the footage to a video editing service.
Choose the clip you want to use
The import flow starts with the system picker for Photos or Files. Choose a talking-head recording, a screen recording or a clip you filmed earlier. Selecting a video gives the app that video, without requiring access to every item in your library.
For a file from another app, save a copy in Files first. A download link is not the same thing as a local video file. Make sure the clip opens and plays before starting an edit.
Prepare iCloud videos before going offline
A video can appear in Photos while its full original is stored in iCloud. Opening that original can require an internet connection. The same applies to a file in a cloud storage provider inside Files.
Download the original while connected, then check that it plays with the connection off. Apple explains how to download copies of iCloud photos and videos. This download is separate from Tap Captions's on-device processing.
Check the source before editing
- Play the full clip and listen for speech that is too quiet or covered by music.
- Confirm that you have the correct version and orientation.
- Leave space for the source, working files and a finished video.
- Keep a copy of the original so you can make another edit later.
Once the clip is ready, use automatic captions for existing speech or text to speech for a new narration.
